Philip Samuel Herman, Jr.; known affectionately as Phil, passed away on August 5, 2024, at the age of 73 in Nashville, Tennessee. Born on December 23, 1950, in Chicago, Illinois, Phil was a man of diverse talents and unwavering dedication, contributing significantly to every community he was part of.
Phil graduated from Ford High School in Chicago and furthered his education at Northwestern University, where he earned a degree in Social Work, and Notre Dame University, where he received a PhD in Theology. His commitment to service was evident early on as he became an Eagle Scout, and later served in the United States Army from 1968 to 1972. His military service was followed by roles in the ROTC, Illinois National Guard, and Army Reserves.
Phil's professional life was marked by a series of impactful roles, including serving as a Police Officer and retiring as a Police Commander from Mt. Prospect, Illinois. He was also a Licensed Adjunct College Instructor for the Criminal Justice Training Authority, a Corrections Director, a Registered EMT, a Certified Home HealthAide, a Registered Social Worker, and the Director of Recipient Rights for the Hospital Psychology Unit in Marshall, Michigan. His compassionate nature led him to volunteer as a Hospital Hospice caregiver and to live a period of his life as a Monk OblSB. Phil attributed three people who who had the largest influence on him; Mrs. Jane Jones, Psychiatrist Sydney Heisler MD, and retired Police Chief Charles Frary.
Aside from his professional and service commitments, Phil was a devout member of Tulip Grove Baptist Church in Old Hickory, Tennessee where he was baptized and attended, from 2018 until his passing. His hobbies included photography, watch repair, cheering for Notre Dame Football, watching Sci-Fi movies, cherishing memories of his beloved dog, Ginger and spending time with his family.
Phil is survived by his loving wife, Lorene Conley-Herman of Old Hickory, TN; his daughters, Jill Herman (Perry) of NY, Kimberly Herman (Robert) of Maryland, Tracy Paulson of Chicago, Catherine Stanhope (Stephen) of Chicago, and Pamela Kamin (Michael) of Chicago; step-daughters, Donetta Hedges (Mike) of TN and Deana Yates of Florida; and step-son, William Daniel Yates (Faithanne) of Michigan. Phil was a proud grandfather to 23 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Elizabeth (Don) Beery of Indiana and Joann Anderson of Chicago. Phil was preceded in death by his parents, Doris J. Herman and Philip S Herman, Sr.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Tulip Grove Baptist Church, 563 Shute Lane, Old Hickory, TN, on September 12, 2024, at 11 am, followed by a meal. Interment details at a VA cemetery are still to be determined. Lumen Cremation, located at 355 E. Main St., Hendersonville, TN 37075, is assisting the family during this time.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Alive Hospice, the Retired Police Officers Association, or Tulip Grove Baptist Church in memory of Phil's enduring spirit and lifelong service.
