Sheila Rose Scarborough, age 73, passed away after a brief battle with Covid which took her from this life unexpectedly early in an unexpected fashion. She was born in Charlotte, NC on the 11th of May in 1948 to parents Samuel Dyer, Jr. and Audrey Eloise Floyd Dyer; and passed on the 20th of September 2021.
She grew up in Mt. Holly, NC and after high school transferred to Nashville, TN to attend Free Will Baptist Bible College (now Welch College in Gallatin, TN.) She graduated from there with a bachelor’s degree in Missions and Elementary Education. While she never went across the seas to work in the mission field per se, her mission fields happened to have been right here in middle TN within the inner-city schools she worked in for over 25 years as a teacher’s aide. There have to be countless children and their families who were directly impacted by her unconditional love for them by her desire in helping them learn, and by sharing God’s love in word and deed no matter which school she worked within. She was also a loyal friend and mentor to many of the teachers she had the opportunity to work alongside throughout the years! After retirement, she enjoyed spending extra time with her grandkids!
She was a longtime member of Cofer’s Chapel Free Will Baptist Church and was in attendance as much as she was able to be; however, along with the pandemic, the virtual attendance of church services became a real-time way for her to attend and become involved with other worship services as well.
Mom was a fighter, she had a rough life… and she did her best, fought for her beliefs (right, wrong, or indifferent) and lived for her kids and her Lord! Now she is in the presence of God Almighty Himself, and all those who she has loved and lost already, her parents, her grandparents, my two sweet angel babies – her granddaughters, my sister, Shawna (a beautiful reunion of a perfected mind and bodies for both of them – wish I could have been there to have seen that… one day!) I envy her joy that she is now experiencing away from this hard world of hard knocks that always seemed to be a thief of joy for her.
However, this world is just a temporary passing of time jutted up to the length of eternity yet to come, an eternity she just entered!
May our joy be full in that knowledge now throughout our grief at her passing. May our lives always be an example to others of Who we live for, even when our lives experience hardships and pain, as hers did. Tomorrow here is never promised, but tomorrow there is! Choose joy. Choose Hope for tomorrow. Choose life everlasting. That’s what my mom would have wanted for each of you!
Sheila is survived by her daughters, Tiffany Crystal (Tommy) Widener and Jaime Samantha (John) Gailey; grandchildren, Shayla Gailey, Lela Gailey, Faith Gailey, Jordan Widener, and Brody Widener.
A memorial celebration of life service will be held in her honor at 11:00am with visitation one hour prior at Cofer’s Chapel Free Will Baptist Church, 3915 Franklin Pike, Nashville, TN 37204 on Saturday, October 2, 2021, with interment of ashes to follow that afternoon at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Goodlettsville, TN.
